Ibiza Preservation Foundation
Plastic Free Ibiza & Formentera is a movement launched in 2018 which brings together 20 local organisations, which aim at preserving and taking care of the island’s environment.
The vision of Plastic Free Ibiza & Formentera is to eliminate single-use plastics in Ibiza and Formentera by 2023. The movement’s mission is to bring together all the different stakeholders which want to take part in protecting our islands from plastic pollution.
Plastic Free Ibiza & Formentera would like to collaborate with companies and events that want to eliminate single-use plastics. This is why it has launched a new campaign which awards businesses with the Plastic Free Ibiza & Formentera certificate: Become a Star. It invites innovative and leading businesses to start eliminating and reducing single-use plastics to protect the environment of our islands.
Moreover, Plastic Free Ibiza & Formentera are the local organisers and representatives of the global movement World Cleanup Day. On the 21st of September 2019, Ibiza will participate in a cleanup which will take place on the same day in over 157 countries around the world. The objective of the World Cleanup Day isn’t just to clean natural environments, but to increase people’s awareness regarding the severity of the incorrect management of our waste. Plastic pollution is one of the greatest threats to our planet. We need to change the way in which produce and consume plastics.
The quantity of plastic around the west coast of Ibiza is 30 times higher than the rest of the Mediterranean.
Only around 17% of urban waste is recycled in Ibiza.
Over 70% of litter picked up on Spanish beaches in the Mediterranean is plastic.
1 out of 6 fish around the Spanish coast contains microplastics.
Eliminate single-use plastics in Ibiza and Formentera by 2023.
Work with companies in creating and implementing a roadmap to reduce single-use plastics within the coming years.
Award the Plastic Free Ibiza & Formentera certificate to a number of companies interested in reducing and eliminating single-use plastics.
Increase awareness regarding the problem of plastic pollution, which will be reflected on an increase in the quantity of plastic waste being recycled. Currently only 17% of urban waste gets recycled.
At a political level, ensure the correct implementation and enforcement of the new Balearic law on waste management.
Organise the World Cleanup Day at a local level and achieve the involvement of local companies.
